When a judge makes a custody ruling, they have one priority in mind: the best interests of the children. Since conventional wisdom holds that children are better off when both of their parents raise them, most of these cases end with a joint custody arrangement, unless circumstances involving the best interest of the child dictate otherwise. There are certain exceptions to the usual joint custody arrangement, however, such as when one parent fails to communicate with the other or can be shown to be unfit to raise children.
